Southeastern's 2018 Shadow Program

Southeastern's Shadow Program: for library workers who want to visit another workplace and/or host a visitor to their workplace.

Deadline to sign up: June 28, 2018

The Southeastern Shadowing Program matches staff* from different libraries with each other so that they can experience a day in the life of another organization. This program is an opportunity for individuals to meet and see how other libraries run, share ideas, resources, or get firsthand experience with an aspect of librarianship that might be different than their current job. It is not a mentoring or job training program.

How it works: Using the online form, either sign up to have someone visit (shadow) you for half a day and/or sign up to visit another person to shadow them for a day.

Southeastern's membership consists of the following institution types, and we are looking for both volunteer hosts and visitors from:

  • academic libraries
  • archives
  • cultural heritage organizations
  • medical libraries
  • museums
  • public libraries
  • public library systems
  • school libraries
  • school library systems
  • special libraries

Volunteers who agree to be shadowed should be available for a 4-hour period of time during the workday and should confirm that they have supervisor approval for guest access. These volunteers may also sign up to shadow at other libraries. This program will only work if we have enough willing volunteers, so we encourage you to sign up if you physically have the space for a guest to shadow you. You might think someone else might not be interested in your job, but there’s a good chance that what seems routine to you will be brand new and informative for someone else.

When all the requests are received, Southeastern will be a "matchmaker" based on your responses. Once you are matched with a colleague in the region, the two of you can communicate to work out a schedule of when to meet.

*This program is open to all staff at all levels and all Southeastern member organizations: librarians, support staff, archivists, information professionals, etc.
